THE WALL – lyrics, and story (patron-only)

Loverlies,
I already spilled that I was working on a new duet with Mishkin Fitzgerald – here is the first version of it!
(Patron-only)
(weiter unten auf deutsch)
Version?
First?
– There will be more, of course. As with CASSANDRA´S TWIN Mishkin came up not only with a super dark piano take for my original version –
– soundtrack style in-your-face brick wall with a rhythm section that makes it what I´d like to call, ahem – “Urban Steampunk”. Hardchor STIMMGEWALT will join us for this version but as they´re touring this month we can only finish that in August – which will us see filming the video as well, at the Berlin Wall of course! (Wanna join? Drop me a line!) –
– but also (this was a typical Feline-sentence :-D) with this beautiful ballad version. So, fair´s fair, we´ll both release this on first! This is a mix, not a master, I hope you´´ll enjoy it though. Once all the versions are finished you´ll get them all as master to replace. This month, you´ll get this from me, a slightly different one from Mish, and I´ll upload a very private version with Christoph singing her part for the +10 patrons – please keep that on for yourself 😀
So here´s what the song is about. I wrote it right after Mish had left after recording CASSANDRA and playing a few amazing shows together. Maybe she´ll tell you some stories she also told me about the personalo part of this song. So I´ll leave that side of the song to her.
For me, having been around when the Wall fell, and living with someone from the other side, all walls are something political, something dangerous, and something totally unneccessary which needs to be removed, or avoided, at all costs. That some orange people talk about building one, that borders are raised, or closed, everywhere in the world, that nations that worked for decades on creting a borderless network now separate themselves from each other like sulky children, makes me
angry – depressed – anxious – terrified – angry again.
So I wrote this song.
When the Berlin Wall fell, I was a teenager. I remember coming to school that morning and my history teacher (I liked her a lot) running towards each of us, hugging several people randomly, and screaming “The Wall is down!”.
For Christoph, the Fall of the Wall was a life saver. His parents were doctors – needed but hated intellectuals. His aunt fled first to the UK, then to the US. His brother was in jail at that time for trying to cross the border (he was only released months later). And Christoph himself, sassy boy, never lied when his teachers asked him about the regime. He even said he didn´t want to go to the military because he was a cellist.
So he was not allowed higher education, pressed into a workmanship training he detested, and not allowed to proceed his musical studies (as a kid, he was considered a prodigy). He became a punk, and a squatter, played drums in a punk band (Backbeat), and had already decided to end his life soon if there was no life for him to lead, nowhere else to go.
For him, the Fall of the Wall was a life saver.
For others, more. His jailed brother, lots of other desparate people, kids whose parents had fled, and of course many politically active persons.
Even so, GDR was not a place where life was threatened by bombs, hunger, terror… it was a prison full of spies and hatred, people DID disappear if not on a daily basis, and nobody, nobody, could speak their thoughts. Because your best friend, your own child, could be a spy. And yes, that happened.
But these very people who werre imprisoned back then, a terrible majority of them right now elects the right wing party, and tries everything, including murder and terror, to make the Syrian refugees go away.
Sulky children. In a sandbox.
I wish.
I, personally, hate borders. I don´t see who might need them. Especially as in big politics borders are treated as a minor inconvenience (I am talking about trade treaties like TTIP, CETA, JEFTA…), and in small party politics stylized to election campaigns. I have lived in a more and more borderless Europe for most of my life, and I loved it. I had hoped to see the last of these borders go away in my lifetime, so that Europe is one big colourful place with many cultures inside, but complete freedom to choose the place you want to live and work. (This was actually reality in the EU with the Schengen treaty for decades. Theoretically it still is. But I can´t see it staying this way right now.)
I ´m talking too much. You know what I mean. Here´s the lyrics.

I could see you, Clearly, All the time
I did know you, Dearly, You were mine
We´ve done nothing, ever, to go wrong
Now we won´t be, never, here for long
The border grows from the ground – like an ugly weed
The border falls from the sky – like an asteroid
The border is made by men – who want to destroy
The border is nothing – but a doomsday ploy
There between us is a wall
Much too high to hear you call
For a doorway much too thick
Every word is just a brick
Here between us is a wall
But I still am standing tall
I will climb it if I must
And will fall into the dust
The border shifts with the mind – like a poisonous breeze
The border maims love and faith – kills with murderous ease
The border blocks sight, thought and peace with bricks made from hate
The border is bigger than everything, the border is fate
How can humans – weaklings – break a wall
Will we ever – live to – see it fall
No one wants it – no one – but it looms
F: and still no one – dares to – throw it down
Here between us is a wall – I am having a big fall
Shards get buried in the dirt – No one sees how much I´m hurt
There between us is a wall – Separating what is all
We have ever been and done – All the keys have long been gone

Sehr.
Also habe ich diesen Song geschrieben.

Alles Liebe,
love and kisses,
Feline
