SCIENCE FICTION – A Space Opera – Video and Lyrics

stream&buy:

I´ve landed on this planet some dozen years ago

but yet I didn´t master life as one of its inhabitants

I walk beside them and observe their strange behaviour

which I don´t fancy anymore. So now I´ll leave!

I´ve built a little space ship around my lonely heart

and right tonight at midnight I will launch my stellar start

My life is science fiction, Endless spaces to explore

I am this space ship´s captain, go where no one´s gone before

I am this space ship´s master, it´s doing what I say

I´m heading upwards to the sky, flying far away

The streets are full of aliens with strangeness in their eyes

Don´t understand a word they speak,

don´t know how I could blend me in

If I could talk to you I´d tell you something:

what you heard – about your world – is nothing but lies

I am a shipwrecked prisoner on a lonely isle

Don´t know where I´m belonging to,

no one seems to be missing me

But now I know at least: I have a mission to fulfill

End this planets – misery and – sweep it from the sky

I´ve built my little space ship inside my wounded soul

and right tonight at midnight will be launchtime for us all

My life is science fiction, Endless spaces to explore

I am this space ship´s captain, go where no one´s gone before

I am this space ship´s master, it´s doing what I say

and if I want to burn this planet comes your judgement day…

WHAT THIS SONG REALLY IS ABOUT. You don´t have to like it. But you oughtta know before sharing, or buying.

Here´s the second of my promised reposts, explaining the real meaning of the song.

SCIENCE FICTION

While this song about an alien stranded on Earth and building herself a spaceship catapulted us in the hearts and minds of the international Steampunk scene (which makes me incrediby happy every single day!), this story is a metaphor trying to find out why somebody runs amok, builds a bomb, kills people they don´t know anything about just for the sake of killing.

I know there´s infinite reasons to do so.

None of them are the least valid. How ever much you are hurt, there is never, ever, a reason to hurt back. Or you´re no better than them.

The question I asked myself is: What would be my reason? And this song, and the resulting backstory which carried F&S through many years already, is the answer. I think it is.

Being alien, for me (in English where the word means both extraterrestrian and stranger, and strange means both unknown and uncanny), means the consistens erratic feeling of not fitting in, of being an outsider wherever I go. Natural for an introvert and notoriously shy person like me. (Yes I am. That´s WHY I go on stage.)

This feeling hurts. And it makes you feel vulnerable, especially when not only “they” do not seem to hear you but you don´t “hear” them either. And I´m not talking of language.

That may sound really strange (sic) from a white priviliged person still living in her country of birth! And I can´t imagine how much more it may feel for a true expat.

But I can always try.

And I think trying makes me a better person. Which leads us to the concept of the album OUT. But that´s another story.

So, in the song, this person takes refuge in the story, or imagination (I never made up my mind whether she really believes in it or just uses it as an excuse), of being a REAL Alien, and what´s more, in having a mission.

Mission from a higher entity, that can be a deity, or the supreme alien race, or your self inflicted idea of saving the world from whatever, all by yourself, because you know better than all the other 7.5 billion people.

Does that sound valid to you?

Does it still sound valid if you imagine SEVERAL higher entities, behaving and looking almost IDENTICAL, but their self-proclaimed terran proxies all thinking they know best, and fighting each other on the heads of people who just want to carry on and would give a shit if they could?

There have been movies with much better CGI than my video about this. But I am strolling to far here.

Things that hurt:

(list does not claim to be complete at all)

  • Not listening to what someone is saying.
  • Telling someone to behave properly according to rules they do not know.
  • Putting up rules that do not refer to the rule giver at all who hasn´t even the opportunity to experience what these rules do to a person, but only to other people. (If you do not understand what I mean, replace by “men/women”, “white/black”, “healthy/sick”, “rich/poor” etc. pp.)
  • Telling people with a mental disorder or just everyday misery to pull themselves together.
  • Making use of people´s trust. Spilling on them, or worse, telling false stories in their name.
  • Lying knowingly to prove your own point. I´m talking about “alternative facts” here. Alternatively to reality.
  • Insisting on using special behaviour (e.g. using cis male pronouns or birth names) after being repeatedly asked not to, on purpose (everyone makes mistakes, and nobody is hurt by an involuntary mistake from an otherwise tolerant and accepting person. Right? See below).
  • Laughing at people. Not with them. No matter whether it´s because they behave or speak differently, look strange (double meaning again), wear clothes you wouldn´t wear, are too loud, are weak, are stupid, or more intelligent than you, have a different opinion, or actually making an involuntary mistake that makes them appear something the are not, or just are having a really bad day, like, a teenager bleeding all over her white jeans.
  • Abusing or hurting people, physically and psychically, for WHATEVER or NO reason.

What hurts you? Feel free to add comments and stories. Or, if you prefer and just need someone to hear you, email them to me. I most definitely won´t tell anybody. But I will reply.

Being hurt can make people want to hurt others. Usually that´s not revenge because the bullies are far away by that time. So that makes these victims bullies as well. Vicious circle.

There really is only one rule to make us all live together happily ever after.

DO. NOT. HURT.

Was verletzt Dich?

Kommentiere, schreib Deine Geschichte.

TU. NICHT. WEH.
